Why are Auctioneers known as Colonel?
At
the end of the Civil War, the Union Army determined that auctions
would be the best way to dispose of surplus goods. Officers with
the rank of Colonel were given the assignment as Auctioneers. Afterwards,
many of them became Auctioneers in civilian life. In fact, so many
of them did, that people automatically refered to any Auctioneer
as Colonel. The practice remains strong today especially in the
Midwest and in the South. Auctioneering schools traditionally bestow
the honorary title of Colonel on their graduates. Colonel Carl is
a graduate of the Missouri Auction School.
